No Tubs For Tots?

One would think, that when traveling to family resort hotels, that all of the hotel rooms would have bathtubs…

Well, they don’t. I know….

what

There is this new “trendy movement” on the hotel scene of only offering showers in the rooms. In some of my recent travels, I’ve noticed that hotels are starting to do away with the shower DOORS, too! As you can imagine, this makes traveling with your kiddo a little more inconvenient.

Who’s genius idea is this, anyway? I don’t know who is responsible for this brainstorm, but just imagine this…

After a long day of traveling, sightseeing and having fun with your little, you might be returning to your hotel room to try and figure out a way to give your baby a shower? A SHOWER!  Oh, this will be good…

Basically, when you’re faced with the dreaded “shower only situation”, you’ve got five really glamorous options.

Option#1 : Team Shower

This is the super complicated, co-shower with your baby. Want to know if this is the right choice for you? Cover a water balloon in Vaseline, fill it up with water, get into the shower yourself, and then try to wash the petroleum jelly off the balloon, without dropping it or popping it. Want extra credit? Draw some eyes on that “Balloon Baby” and make sure you don’t get soap in the eyes. Sounds like fun, right? That’s pretty much what it’s like to juggle a baby in the shower. Not my top pic for a solution.

Option #2: Sit-N-Shower

I can’t even tell you the amount of times I’ve done this. Basically how this works is you sit on the floor of the shower, holding your baby, with water blasting all over your heads and hopelessly try not to think about all of of feet bacteria and toe fungi around you. You also have two streams of water to deal with, it’s either a full blast, water in the eyes stream, or you’re freezing from sitting off to the side of the shower stream, while darting in and out of the water. Either way, not a good time.

Option #3: Sink It

If your kiddo is small enough, you can always opt for a simple sink bath instead of the shower. However, the challenge in bathing a baby in a hotel sink vs your kitchen sink, is that in most cases the faucet is fixed. This means you can’t push it off to the side to make more room in the sink and depending on the squirmy level of your baby, it can be a smidge of hazard. A decent, but not ideal option.

Option#4: Inflato-tub

This is the best move! If you can, invest in an inflatable travel bathtub (I got mine for like $20). I bring it along whenever I’m faced with the trendy, “Shower Only”, hotel room thing. It barely takes up any space in your luggage and you can blow it up in a few minutes. It’s even a good idea for younger babies when you DO have a bathtub to use. This will totally save you from from the first two weird options and it provides a safe bathing environment for your little.

Option #5: The Wipe Down

When all else fails, or time is short, I’ll skip the shower attempts all together. You know, sometimes it’s just not the worth the struggle! In those cases, I run a little soapy sink water, and sponge down my little one. In some desperate times, I’ve resorted to just a baby wipe bath. It’s not the best option, and I don’t recommend it for multiple nights in a row, but if you’re in a pinch, it’ll do the trick.

A word of warning…

No matter how you’re prepping for shower time, be ready for the inevitable “pre-soak”. For some reason, when a baby gets nakey, and the shower water is running to warm up, they get a little too relaxed and….well…you get the idea.

Wishing you good luck on your adventures in hotel bath time!

  1. One more option: If the shower has a lip around the edge, block the drain with a plastic baggy or even a wash cloth (or buy one of those flat drain cover things at the dollar store). Then let the shower run until there is an inch or two of water in the bottom of the shower. Use the ice bucket to cellect some warm water from the shower to use for rinsing. Turn off water and insert small child. They’ll have fun splashing and you can get them clean.
